In the beetleweight rumble,
Tipan and Family Joules teamed
up when the builders placed the
now immobile drum spinner inside
Tipan’s large dustpan beforehand,
though once it began, Family
Joules was quickly knocked loose by
Cloud of Suspicion. Throughout the
rest of the rumble, Dr. Feelgood
continually shot airsoft pellets at
random all through the arena,
eventually causing the new arena
light to break loose from the
ceiling. By the end of the rumble,
Cloud of Suspicion was the only
robot left moving, with Drumbeat
and Family Joules still left in the
arena, though sessile.
After the event was over,
Brandon Davis from Found Object
Robots taught a small class to some
audience members on how to
build a combat robot, answering
questions with the help of other
builders. The full event results are
listed in the sidebar. SV
PARTS IS PARTS:
Cust m Colson Wheel Hubs
1. Use a hacksaw to cut 2”
aluminum round bar into several
1/4” thick blanks. I highly
recommend a bandsaw for this job:
2. This hub is designed to be used
with standard drill motors. I used a
21/64” drill bit to drill the center
hole:

3. Tap the center hole for 3/8-24
threads. The holes to mount the
hub to wheel are also drilled:
4. I machined the core of the 4x2”
Colson wheel out so that the hub
would pop into place so that the
overall width of my bot would
be shorter:
5. The drill motor threads onto the
hub and is secured on the other
side with a 3/8-24 locknut. I
attached the hub to the wheel with
a pair of 10-32 screws:
6. It is very important to make sure
your motors are mounted as firmly
as your wheels are. SV
