storage ideas for when you don’t
need a fancy solution.
Shoeboxes still make great
storage containers. Keep the lid so
you can stack the boxes, or just use it
open if you need quick access.
Zipper-locking food storage bags
— particularly the heavy duty ones for
freezer use — make ideal containers
for odd-sized items. Mark the contents
with a Sharpie or other wide felt pen,
and toss into a box (a shoebox) for
safe keeping. Tip: The wide bottom
bags stand up.
Baby food jars — plastic or glass —
continue to be an excellent storage
solution for very small parts such as
2-56 size hardware or even surface-mount components. (Use glass jars
for electronics parts as it doesn’t
generate static.) For fast access to the
contents of baby food jars, nail or
screw the lid into the underside of a
shelf near your workbench. Then, just
twist the jar on and off. Be sure to
leave room between the jars for your
hands to grab them.
Empty egg crates and egg boxes
are also useful for holding small parts,
but take care not to overturn the crate
or box, as the lid doesn’t close over
the hollow for the egg. If you’re not
careful, your parts may spill out or get
assortment of totes, drawers, bins,
and other heavy-duty items.
