EVENT REP RT:
Bay Area Robot Fights at
MetroCon in Tampa
MetroCon is an Anime Convention that is held
annually in Tampa, FL. This was the
seventh annual year that MetroCon
has been held, and it is the largest
Anime Festival in the state of
Florida. This year, MetroCon hosted

an event for Bay Area Robot Fights
(BARF). (Yes, TeamPyramid — the
event originators — know what it
spells. Be glad they settled for that
name, and not some of their other
ideas!) The event featured both
Antweights (one pound) and
Beetleweights (three pounds). A
total of 22 robots registered for the
event: 12 Antweights and 10
Beetleweights. The event organizer
was Seth Carr, a long time SECR
insect fighter. The event was a
popular one at MetroCon. At times,
spectators had to stand or sit on the
floor due to lack of seating in the
room. This event turned out to be
an interesting mix of costumed
convention goers mingling with the
“super nerd” robot builders. Men,
women, and children dressed as
Pokemon, Naruto characters, and
various other Anime characters
looked on as an epic battle to the
death unfolded.
The Antweight competition was
held as a double elimination tournament. Babe the Blue Bot of team
Legendary Robotics came in first
place for the Antweights. Black and
Decker Robot Wrecker of Cutting
Edge Robotics placed second, and
Verbal Irony of A.G. Robotics placed
third. In the final fight for the
Antweights, sparks flew as the
vertical saw blade of BDRW tore
into the titanium frame of Babe.
Unfazed, Babe — a wedge bot —
