EVENT REPORT:
Fighting Rob ts Invade
Classic RC Raceways
● by Chris Olin
The Ohio Robotics Club (ORC) — a member of
the Robot Fighting League
(RFL) — held its tenth
event, “House of Robotic
Destruction Fall 2009”
(HORD) at Classic RC
Raceways in Akron, OH on
September 19th 2009.
Classic RC Raceways is a
year-round RC racing
facility featuring indoor
and outdoor race tracks.
The event was held in
the indoor facility while
monster trucks raced and jumped
over the outdoor track. This
year’s HORD featured 13 robots
fighting it out in ORC’s 4 x 8 insect
arena which features two trap
doors that open midway through
the match.
The fleaweight class (150 kg)
featured two robots fighting a
best two out of three. Lefty, a
servo powered lifter driven by
ORC cofounder Chris Olin,
prevailed in the first match.
However, his opponent, Defence-Defence-Defence Flea — a two
wheel wedge bot driven by
PennBot veteran Richard Kelley —
came back from behind, winning
the next two matches and taking
home the prize.
The antweight class (1 lb)
featured four robots fighting a
round robin tournament which
ended with two robots tied for
first place. This forced a tie
breaker match between two past
HORD champions: The Froogin, a
two wheeled pushy bot driven by
ORC cofounder Ron Barron; and
First Place Antweight
“The Froogin.”
First Place Fleaweight
“Defence-Defence-Defence Flea.”
Lab Assistant, a four wheeled
robot with a lift powered by an
ultra high torque robot servo,
driven by Chris Olin. Midway
through the match, Lab Assistant’s
battery began to fade, giving The
Froogin an easy victory and the first
place trophy.
Meanwhile in the beetleweight
class ( 3 lb), eight robots fought
through a full seven rounds of a
round robin tournament. Past
HORD Champion Up Tech — a two
wheeled wedge driven by Ron
Barron — pushed his way to an
impressive five wins out of seven.
