April is 11 years old and has been designing and building heavyweight fighting robots for two years. That statement
must be untrue, right? Certainly,
many people on social media think
so. Anyone who has built a fighting
robot will know that the skills you
need to construct these complex
monster machines are way beyond the
capability of an 11 year old girl ... or
so they say.
The absolute truth of the matter
is that all teams consist of a mix of
people with individual skill sets, that
when added together bring everything
that a team needs to build a fighting
robot. Although many can, not every
member of every team is capable of
building a fighting robot solo. This
applies to our team.
April is not capable of building
a finished robot without some help,
but how much does she actually do,
and how does that compare to adult
teams? April does
not weld, but I do.

to use power tools,

The concept for
Princess came from
a drawing April
did when trying to
come up with ideas
for the TV show, Robot Wars, when it
was rebooted in the UK in 2016. She
was nine at the time and came up
with a lot of crazy ideas. I will admit,
I ignored this one because it was too
ambitious. When a Chinese show
asked us to enter a design for them, I
was not in a good place health wise,
so I told April to come up with an idea
to modify our latest robot, GlitterBomb
B-spec since it was working, ready to
fight, and easy to cosmetically change.
She drew up a plan to swap the
two titanium GlitterBomb axes for a
single dragon head steel fabrication.
She had big wings and claws in her
concept drawing and wanted the
robot to look like the national flag of
Wales — our country within the UK.
The drawing was very well
thought out, and I really liked it, but
again, I thought it was too ambitious.
So, I suggested we dial it back a bit.
We submitted the drawing to the
Chinese show anyway and forgot
Clash Bots contacted us and asked
if we would be interested in coming
to China. I was not so motivated at
that time. We had already applied to
another show (which came to nothing)
and I was still not too healthy.
