My wife often comments that I always seem to have a collection of robots that
aren’t quite finished or are in a state
of disrepair. She’s my wife, so
naturally she’s always right, but in this
case having a robot that was a POP
(Pile of Parts) paid off.
When Micah from Team Tiki fame
was searching for someone going to
an upcoming event to test out his
new gearmotors, I knew I had the
perfect storm. I really wanted to put
some new drive motors in my
upcoming three pound vertical
spinner, Scary! Scary! SCARY!, but I
couldn’t find a suitable motor that
provided the torque and speed I was
looking for. (Refer to the previous
Scary build report for more
information on the complete bot.) I
also had the Orlando Maker Faire
event coming up in six weeks.
Micah sent over two complete
drivetrain packages which included
the gearmotors with tires and hubs
attached. The entire combo weighs
about 3.0 oz on my unofficial postal
scale. The length of the gearmotor is
~ 3.0” including the shaft, and is just
shy of 1” wide at the motor with the
included heat shrink. The heat shrink
is applied by Micah to help secure the
motor to the gearbox.
