When we say 'the sea' or 'the ocean,' most people have a pretty clear
picture of what they think is meant — a large body of water. Perhaps
under a clear tropical sky, with a warm beach and palm trees; perhaps
the tempestuous heaving of the stormy Atlantic, with lashing spray and
foam whipped by winds; or maybe, for a few, the inky cold depths of the
abyssal ocean, with a few crabs and worms slithering near a
hydrothermal vent, hinting at life's deep origins.
