If you’re reading this magazine, you’ve probably spent hours watching BattleBots episodes full
of mayhem and destruction. You’ve
seen Nightmare, Son of Whyachi, and
Diesector rule the arena with their
spectacular performances. For us, the
builders of these machines became
the heroes of the sport. Jim
Smentowski, Terry Ewert, and Donald
Hutson (creators of the robots
mentioned earlier) were our
celebrities.
If we had a chance to meet them,
we were more awestruck than if we
were meeting any rock band or sports
team. They were always excited to
meet the new builders and willing to
indulge our questions and encourage
our participation. They were superstars.
